            Overview

            About La Paz Apartments

La Paz Apartments holds 115 homes on 4.55 acres fronting Brookhurst Street, all of them addressed on that one street and all carrying a unit suffix. The county assesses the property as a single land parcel of 198,361 square feet carrying about 92,932 square feet of building, so the homes are not separately assessed.

The general plan designates the whole property High Density Residential, which allows 15 to 30 homes to the acre, and 115 homes on 4.55 acres sits inside that range. FEMA places all of it in Zone X as an area with reduced flood risk due to levee. Fountain Valley School District's school locator assigns the address range to Plavan Elementary and Masuda Middle, and Huntington Beach Union High School District's boundary map puts it inside Fountain Valley High.

            History

How La Paz Apartments was built

La Paz is Spanish for peace, and it is also the name of a Baja California port and a Bolivian capital, so the sign has always been open to interpretation. What is certain is the building: 115 homes on four and a half acres fronting Brookhurst Street, put up in 1969.

That was the decade Fountain Valley changed completely. It had been the farm settlement of Talbert, named for a family that bought over 300 acres of peat and swampland here around 1896 and opened a general store, with a post office from 1899 and Pacific Electric cars running through from 5 July 1909. Sugar beets grown on this flat went to the refineries at Huntington Beach and Delhi.
