How Serena Vista Apartments was built
The name is Spanish for the serene view, and the address is La Hacienda, the ranch house, one of a small run of Spanish and northern California street names laid through this part of Warner Avenue. There are 172 homes on twelve acres, part of a cluster of large apartment communities that share these lanes.
The view from here was farmland into the 1960s. This flat was part of Rancho Las Bolsas, 33,460 acres confirmed in 1834 to Maria Catarina Ruiz, widow of Jose Antonio Nieto, when Governor Jose Figueroa broke the 167,000 acre Nieto grant into five ranchos. American farmers found peat, willow thickets and artesian water, called the marsh below Santa Ana Gospel Swamp and its residents Swamp Angels, and grew sugar beets that went to the plants at Huntington Beach and Delhi.
