How Vintage Canyon was built
The Orange Freeway opened and the Brea Mall was built in the 1970s, pulling the city's commercial center east of the old grid, and industrial parks and retail filled the corridor through the 1970s and 1980s as companies came for a site near the meeting point of four Southern California counties. Attached housing followed, and Vintage Canyon is 107 homes on just over two acres, nearly all addressed by unit number.
A sculpture called Ascending Dancer by Robert Holmes stands inside those two acres, part of a collection the city has been building since 1975 by requiring the developer of each project to commission a permanent outdoor work reviewed before placement. The whole boundary sits inside the liquefaction zone the city maps on the valley floor, which is worth a word with an inspector before an offer.
