How Canyon View Estates was built
Four streets and seventy six homes on 19.2 acres, which is about as lightly built as ground gets in Aliso Viejo. The names are not California at all but the Colorado Plateau: Vermilion Cliffs, Crimson Canyon, Glittering Sky and Prescott, the first territorial capital of Arizona. Somebody wanted red rock and high desert on a hillside above the Pacific.
The real canyon is next door. When the Mission Viejo Company bought the last 6,600 acres of the Moulton Ranch in 1976 and the county approved the master plan in 1979, 2,600 acres went to the county for what became the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. It opened on 31 March 1990 and now covers about 4,500 acres with roughly thirty miles of trails, three creeks, 137 species of nesting and migratory birds and old growth oak and sycamore groves recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network in 2021.
