How Haven Hill was built
Frontier, Trapper, Scout, Settler, Pathfinder, Prospector and Cowboy are the streets of two adjoining neighborhoods on this hillside, and the naming is a single scheme split across them. It is the cast of a western: the man who traps, the man who scouts ahead, the man who files a claim, the family that stays. Haven Hill holds Frontier and Trapper, with River Valley Road running down toward the Santa Ana and Imperial Highway along the top.
Anaheim Hills itself began on 30 October 1970, when Santa Anita Consolidated took deed to 4,200 acres of the Nohl Ranch to build a planned community, and a Texaco Ventures joint venture took over the residential land in August 1971. The first neighborhood, Westridge, opened in July 1972, and the city bought a separate 300 acres for a golf course that Richard Bigler laid out and that opened the same year. Haven Hill is small and late by comparison, sixty three houses built between 1980 and 1983 on lots averaging better than fifteen thousand square feet, which is well above the Anaheim Hills norm and part of why thirty six of them carry a pool. The bends in the streets are not decoration: Anaheim Hills was the first residential development anywhere to use landform grading, shaping the building pads to the natural line of the ridge instead of cutting them into flat steps.
