            Bandera Estates

Eighty-eight addresses on 10.2 acres, one of the five mobile home parks the City of Brea's housing record names, on ground first mapped in 1918.

            Overview

            About Bandera Estates

Bandera Estates covers 10.2 acres in central Brea and holds 88 addresses across nine streets. East Paseo De Toner carries 45 of them, about half the community, with the rest spread over North Rogers Court, North Martin Court, North Blystone Court, North Bandera Way, North Taylor Court, East Gomes Way and North Virginia Way, most of them holding six or seven. The city's parcel layer records only four parcels beneath all of it, and the county parcel record classifies the housing as manufactured homes.

The City of Brea's housing record names Bandera Estates as one of the city's five mobile home parks, alongside Crestmont, Hollydale, Lake Park Brea and Rancho Brea. The zoning is R-3 across all 10.2 acres and the general plan carries 10.1 of them as High Density Residential. None of the boundary falls in an elevated fire class. Bandera Estates is a short walk from two Brea Olinda campuses: Laurel Elementary is 0.34 miles away with 434 students and Brea Junior High 0.37 miles with 921, and Brea Olinda High is 1.33 miles.

            History

            How Bandera Estates was built

The flat ground in the middle of Brea was farmed before it was built on. Basque families who came in as sheep men from 1870 stayed on and put down wells, and those with reliable water planted walnuts and citrus, a living that held until about 1913. Oil overtook it. Drilling in the Brea-Olinda field began in 1896, the strike of 1898 brought the derricks, and the town that incorporated in 1917 lived on both at once, which is where the Chamber of Commerce slogan of the 1920s came from: oil, oranges and opportunity.

Housing was short from the beginning. In the first years of cityhood the Union Oil Company set aside several streets near the town center for a neighborhood of efficient tract houses for its workers, and the pattern of modest, closely spaced homes in central Brea starts there. Bandera Estates is a later answer to the same problem. It is one of the five mobile home parks the City of Brea's housing record names, alongside Crestmont, Hollydale, Lake Park Brea and Rancho Brea, and it holds eighty-eight addresses on ten acres.
