How Durango was built
Durango is the most literally Spanish neighborhood in a city full of Spanish street names, because here the names are actual places. Durango and Guadalajara are cities in Mexico. Madrid, Toledo, Avila, Estepona, Daroca and Abaran are towns in Spain, Toledo and Avila being two of the great walled cities of Castile. Minorca is one of the Balearic islands. Alameda means the poplar grove, and it is also the standard Spanish word for a tree lined promenade. The set reads as a tour rather than a theme.
The community sits on about 21 acres off Beach Boulevard in the 90621 district and holds roughly 233 addresses on homes that share walls, with a middle lot size near a twenty third of an acre. It went up all at once and fast: the county assessor dates every home it can date inside the boundary to 1972 or 1973, and nothing here is older than that. The density puts Durango in a different family from the detached ranch grids that make up most of Buena Park, and it is what California started building once land near the boulevard became too valuable for quarter acre lots.
