            History

            How Santa Tract was built

Where the neighborhood next door runs through male saints, this one runs through female ones. Santa Berta, Santa Cecilia in spirit if not in name, Santa Elena, Santa Elvira, Santa Inez, Santa Irene, Santa Isabel, Santa Lucia, Santa Marta, Santa Rita, Santa Teresa and Santa Valera. Mixed in are the California place names everybody already knows, Santa Ana, Santa Anita, Santa Catalina, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Santa Paula, and Santa Cruz simply means holy cross.

One name on the list is doing more work than the rest. Santa Fe is not a saint but a railway, and the railway is the reason there is a town here at all. James A. Whitaker founded Buena Park in 1887 during the land boom that came with the construction of the first railroads through the district, and the Santa Fe rate war of that year is what put Orange County within reach of buyers from the east.
