How South America Tract was built
The street list is a map of Latin America. Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guiana, Paraguay and Peru cover the southern continent; Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico cover the isthmus; and Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad add the Caribbean. Rio rounds it off. It is a school wall map turned into a street grid, and it sits on 96 acres holding about 491 homes on lots near a seventh of an acre, framed by Valley View.
Naming a subdivision after countries was a way of promising the world to buyers who had just arrived from somewhere colder, and Buena Park had plenty of those. The city incorporated on 27 January 1953, when Orange County clerk B. J. Smith swore in the first council and Grady Travis was elected mayor, and the population went from farm town to suburb inside twenty years.
