How China Cove Condos was built
The name comes from the cove at the harbor entrance below, and the cove was named for a house. In 1929 the department store magnate William Lindsay and his wife Sara built a home on the rocks at the mouth of Newport Harbor with an oriental roofline, ornate fixtures and a gold leaf dragon. It was bright pink, it was visible from well out to sea, and mariners used it as a landmark. Locals called it the China House and then called the water beneath it China Cove. The house was demolished in the 1980s and its roof tiles were reused on a small building above a garage on Way Lane, about fifty yards from where it stood.
The association itself is eleven condominiums on Dahlia Place, up on the bluff a short walk from Lookout Point and Big Corona rather than down in the cove. The record that created them dates from 1972, so this is a small 1970s infill dropped into the 1904 village grid that took the cove's name for its own.
