How Harbor View Hills South was built
Of the homes the county carries a construction year for inside this boundary, 443 of 449 fall in the 1960s and 236 of them read 1969 alone, so most of the neighborhood went up in a single season. The two builder tracts here are the ones agents still call Harbor View Hills 1 and Harbor View Hills 2, and their streets were named off the water rather than the garden: Sandcastle, Keel, Outrigger, Catamaran, Tiller, Topside, Seacrest, and the short cul de sacs called Blue Key, Sand Key, Key View, Key West and Key Bay.
The eastern edge of the neighborhood stops at Buck Gully, a coastal canyon draining a watershed of roughly 1,200 acres out of the San Joaquin foothills. The canyon passed from the Irvine Company to the county and then to the city, which accepted the reserve lands in Upper Buck Gully in 2005 and opened the trail to the public in 2012 after four bridges were built over the creek that runs there year round. Living on the rim has a cost as well as a view, and the state fire hazard map now rates most of this boundary in its highest category.
