            History

How Pointe del Mar was built

The grid below this address was laid out after George E. Hart bought about 700 acres of Irvine Ranch oceanfront in 1904 and named it crown of the sea. F. D. Cornell, who took over the unsold ground in 1916, named the streets running down to the water after flowers in alphabetical order and left the cross streets numbered, which is why Corona del Mar still has a First through Fifth Avenue and no Sixth. Fifth Avenue is the inland edge of that original village, and for most of the twentieth century what lay above and behind it was open ground.

Pointe del Mar was one of the last pieces of it to be built. The site was subdivided in 1986 and the houses followed at once: the county carries a construction year for all 43 homes inside the boundary and every one of them reads 1987. The whole community is reached from one private avenue that carries its name, and it sits directly against Grant Howald Park and the Community Youth Center, with the small park the city calls Old School Park a short walk away.
