            History

            How Coco Palms was built

Coco Palms was built in 1964 along Commonwealth Avenue, which makes it one of the oldest communities Fullerton draws on its own boundary layer. It is single story throughout, spread low across 8.2 acres, which is why it holds around 148 addresses on ground that a later developer would have stacked.

The name belongs to its decade. Much of Blue Hawaii was shot at the Coco Palms on Kauai in 1961, three years before ground was broken here. Hawaii had become a state in 1959, and Polynesian styling ran through Southern California apartment building for most of the decade that followed. A single story complex with a pool and a clubhouse, named Coco Palms and finished in 1964, sits squarely in that fashion.
