How St. Augustine I was built
St. Augustine sits on the inland ridge near the SeaCliff golf course, and the naming follows the game. The club opened in 1966 with a course by the architect J. Press Maxwell, and the housing around it was built out over the following thirty years. Callaway Circle and Poppy Hill Circle here are golf names, and Jasmine, Dogwood and Sugarberry keep the planting theme going. All 71 homes were finished between 1998 and 2000 on about 14 acres.
The ground was oil land before that. Much of it belonged to the Huntington Beach Company, wholly owned by Chevron. The Huntington A-1 well began producing on 24 May 1920, and by October 1921 the field carried 59 producing wells making roughly 16,500 barrels a day. Houses that stood where the drillers wanted to be were moved six miles north in 1921 and 1922 to lots in Midway City.
