How West Port at Peninsula was built
West Port stands on the high ground between the coast and Huntington Central Park, land that was in oil production for most of the last century. Twenty five wells lie plugged inside the community boundary, every one of them drilled on Chevron's Huntington A lease. The field opened with the Huntington A-1 well on 24 May 1920, ran to 59 producing wells at about 16,500 barrels a day by October 1921, and had given up more than a billion barrels by 2000. It is still worked, and California Resources Production Corporation runs 179 of the 304 wells still active in the field.
The houses here are recent. All 127 of them were finished in 1997 and 1998 on about 32 acres. The plan runs to nine streets and six of them are circles, Braddock, Festival, Garland, Glenview, Summerwood and Sunnyside, hung off Forester Drive, Royal Grove Drive and Foxglen Lane. All of it sits on ground that was a working oil lease.
