            Boat Canyon

            Overview

            About Boat Canyon

Boat Canyon covers the slopes behind Fisherman's Cove and the ridge above, on streets named for trees and flowers: Poplar, Jasmine, Holly, Aster, Locust, Myrtle and Linden, with High Drive, Panorama Drive, Pinecrest Drive and Sunset Ridge Drive along the higher ground. The city draws it as evacuation zone 5 and records 774 households inside it. Across 346 acres the assessor counts 580 parcels on forty-four named streets, and the city zones 505 of its 569 parcels R1.

A hundred and sixty-four of the 346 acres are Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, and 2.42 miles of that park's trails run inside the boundary, more wilderness trail than any other named area holds. Seventy-one further acres are open space preserve. The Festival of Arts grounds at 650 Laguna Canyon Road and Riddle Field Park at 555 Hillcrest Drive both sit inside the line, and six bus stops serve it. Laguna Beach Unified serves the canyon from four campuses and 2,291 students, El Morro and Top of the World elementaries feeding Thurston Middle and then Laguna Beach High.

            History

            How Boat Canyon was built

Joe Lucas arrived in this canyon in 1880 and never left the story. He was born on Fayal in the Azores and had been a whaler before he washed up in Laguna, where he lived in a one room shack on the old Rogers land at the canyon mouth. He walked the beach every day with a pail and a trident, county supervisors saw to it that he had groceries, and his own table served as the altar for the first Mass said in Laguna Canyon. He stayed twenty eight years and died in 1908, and the town has counted him as its first greeter ever since. Eiler Larsen took up the job in 1938 and became the only greeter the city council ever named official.

The beach below was Fisherman’s Cove, and behind it the city of Santa Ana ran one of Laguna’s two summer camps, two or three long rows of tents kept in good order, with a platform for dancing, parties, picnics and clam bakes; Riverside families camped down on the flat in the village. Families came over the dirt canyon road to escape inland heat, and that seasonal camping habit is what first made Laguna a place people came back to.

Building started early and continued: roughly half the structures inside the boundary predate 1950, and the 1920s produced almost as many houses as the 1960s did.
