How Lakepark was built
Lakepark takes its name from the park across the road, and the park has a documented origin. Laguna Niguel Regional Park sits on ground that was part of Rancho Niguel, granted to Juan Avila in 1842 by Governor Alvarado and named for a local Indian village. The Laguna Niguel Corporation gave 109 acres for county park use in 1970, the county and the flood control district bought a further 45 acres including the lake and its dam, and the park opened to the public in 1973. A concession building and boat dock followed in 1976.
Lakepark went up alongside it. The city's record runs its years built from 1976 to 1988 with a median of 1977, and 161 of its dated homes carry that single year, so most of the community arrived within a season or two of the park's first improvements. Twenty streets run through its 53 acres, and the set reads as a tour of American water and wilderness: Tahoe, Teton, Casitas, Caswell, Palmetto and Big Bend, which carries the longest run inside the boundary.
