Overview
About New Dutch Haven
New Dutch Haven covers 31 acres of Los Alamitos, 162 parcels carrying 162 addresses, one for one, on lots of about 0.14 acres. Seven named streets run 1.17 miles inside the boundary, and six of them carry the names of United States Navy carriers: Antietam, Bennington, Kearsarge, Mindora, Siboney and Tripoli. Only Howard, the through street, does not.
There is no park inside the boundary, and the city's Open Space Element counts New Dutch Haven among four neighborhoods whose residents cannot easily walk to park space in Los Alamitos, with a quarter mile pocket park as the stated answer. About fifty homes across this neighborhood and Highlands sit above the 65 dBA CNEL contour the airport land use plan draws around the Joint Forces Training Base, and those homes are required to be sound attenuated to keep interior levels under 45 dBA. Los Alamitos Unified School District covers the neighborhood, with Oak Middle enrolling 1,017, McAuliffe Middle 1,031 and Los Alamitos High 2,809.

How New Dutch Haven was built
The naming idea that produced Carrier Row a few blocks away was still in use fifteen years later. Antietam, Bennington and Kearsarge were all Essex class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy, and Mindoro, Siboney and Tripoli carry the names of escort carriers from the same fleet. By the time these streets were cut, the airfield east of town had been the busiest reserve air base in the country during the Korean War, and naming a street for a flat top was a plain statement of who the buyers were expected to be.
County records put every home inside this boundary in a single year, 1963, across roughly one hundred and sixty houses on thirty one acres. That is a neighborhood built in one season rather than filled in over a decade, and it shows in the consistency of the rooflines. New Dutch Haven is one of the follow on subdivisions that came after Ross Cortese's Rossmoor proved the market next door.
