How Dove Canyon was built
Dove Canyon was not part of Rancho Santa Margarita when it was built. It is a separate gated community of about eight hundred acres in the Santa Ana Mountain foothills, laid out at the end of the 1980s on the old O'Neill ranch, and it only became part of a city when its residents voted in 1999 alongside Robinson Ranch, Rancho Cielo, Trabuco Highlands and Walden to join Rancho Santa Margarita proper. The new city incorporated on 1 January 2000 as Orange County's thirty third.
The center of it is the golf course. Dove Canyon Country Club opened in 1991 and remains the only private Jack Nicklaus Signature course in Orange County. Nicklaus Design says Nicklaus walked every fairway, landing area and green himself before signing off on the layout, and the course was routed through rolling hills, green canyons and waterfalls, with deer that still wander the fairways. The street names follow the terrain rather than the Spanish theme used down on the plain: Bell Canyon Drive, Golf Ridge Drive, Summitcrest, Hillrise and Glen Echo.
