How Las Flores II was built
Las Flores II shares a name with its neighbor and almost nothing else about its street signs. Where Las Flores I is planted with flowers, the second phase is entirely birds, and in Spanish: Gavilan is a sparrowhawk, Gaviota a gull, Mirlo a blackbird, Pica Flor a hummingbird and Andarrios a sandpiper. Six streets, six birds, laid over 8.8 acres holding 188 homes.
The ground was Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, a grant of 133,440 acres made by Governor Juan Alvarado in 1841 to Pio Pico and his brother Andres. Juan Forster acquired it, and after he died in 1882 it passed to Richard O'Neill and James Flood. Construction on the modern community began in 1986 and the city incorporated on 1 January 2000 as Orange County's 33rd.
