How Rancho Cielo was built
Rancho Cielo means the sky ranch and the street names never leave the air. Camino del Cielo is the road of the sky, Via de la Luz of the light, Las Nubes the clouds, Via del Viento the wind, Estrella the star and Via del Sol the sun, with Pajarito and Via del Nido bringing in the small birds and their nests. Seventeen streets, and the ones that are not sky are the things that live in it.
The Mexican governors carved the land around Mission San Juan Capistrano into three ranchos, Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita and Rancho Trabuco, and James Flood and Jerome O'Neill bought the combined holding in 1882. It was divided in 1940, the Flood family taking the lower portion in what is now San Diego County and the O'Neill family keeping the upper portion this city stands on. The first tract homes anywhere near here came late in the 1960s at Coto de Caza, which started out as a hunting and fishing resort, and this side of the hills stayed empty until the first Rancho Santa Margarita homes sold in 1986.
