How Misty Ridge was built
Misty Ridge is a small pocket of large houses at the top of Avenida Salvador, on ground that reaches about 750 feet above sea level. That is one of the highest points in San Clemente, and the lots run generous. The houses went up between 1984 and 1992, the great majority of them in the 1980s. The street names give away what the place was named for. Calle Tibidabo and Calle Monserrat are the two heights that look down on Barcelona: Tibidabo, at 512 meters the tallest hill in the Serra de Collserola, is the one with the view over the whole city and the coastline, and Montserrat is the serrated mountain that carries the Benedictine abbey. Calle Malaguena and Calle Dulcinea fill out the rest.
Naming a hilltop street after a hilltop is not an accident in this city. Ole Hanson, a former mayor of Seattle, bought two thousand acres of coast in 1925 and sold it as a Spanish village by the sea, with a rule that every building carry a red tile roof, white stuccoed walls, recessed windows, arches, balconies and courtyards. He also handed the town a 1,200 foot fishing pier, three thousand feet of public beach, a golf course, an Olympic size pool, a school, a park and seventeen miles of bridle trails, all of it publicly owned, which was not how coastal resorts were usually put together in the 1920s. San Clemente incorporated in February 1928.

Lifestyle
The Misty Ridge lifestyle
San Clemente keeps ten beaches of its own along the shore, from North Beach past the pier to Riviera, and the city's Marine Safety division staffs them. The pier itself carries restrooms, metered parking, fire rings and the Amtrak and Metrolink platform at its foot.
The city publishes five trail networks that run from the sand up into the canyons and along the ridgelines. Bikes are welcome on all of them, electric bikes are not allowed on the Beach Trail, dogs are welcome on a leash, and horses are permitted on the Forster Ridgeline, Prima Deshecha and Cristianitos trails. City parks are open from 6 am to 10 pm without a reservation unless a group needs a permit.
