How Laurelhurst was built
Laurelhurst is a 1960s tract in almost the purest sense: nearly all of its houses date to that one decade, built right beside Valley Adams on streets like Saint Andrew Place, Saint Anne Place and Saint Gertrude Place, a run of saints' names threaded between Harvard Street and Warner Avenue.
Carr Intermediate, a few blocks away, carries more history than its name lets on. It opened in 1955 as Ralph C. Smedley Junior High, honoring the YMCA director who had gathered a small group of men in the basement of the Santa Ana YMCA on October 22, 1924, to practice public speaking, a club that grew into Toastmasters International. Smedley ran the Santa Ana YMCA and led Toastmasters until 1941, then worked full time for the organization until his death in 1965.
