How Santa Anita was built
Out on the west side, between Harbor Boulevard and roughly Jackson Street and running from Campesino Park south to Santa Anita Park, is Barrio Santa Anita. This was farm and river bottom country long after the rest of the city had filled in.
The houses came in waves, most of them between the 1940s and the 1960s, and the typical house across the neighborhood dates to 1958. Children on the western streets are zoned to Russell Elementary, which belongs to the Garden Grove Unified School District rather than to Santa Ana's own.
