How Tustin Acres Condos was built
Tustin Acres opened in 1963 on West Main Street as a 180 unit garden apartment complex, advertised in the Tustin News, in a phrase the city's historical resources survey quotes, as considerate and modest rentals. It was converted to condominiums in 1980, which is how it is owned today.
It is a short walk from Old Town, the block of Main Street and El Camino Real where the buildings go back to the 1880s. That is the ground Columbus Tustin laid out around 1870 after he and Nelson O. Stafford bought into the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana in 1868 for something under two dollars an acre. When nobody bought his lots, Tustin gave them away to anyone who would build a house on one, and the town slowly picked up three stores, a meat market, a tin shop and a saloon.
