            History

            How Travis Ranch was built

The name is J. Coleman Travis, who bought the Esperanza ranch of 249 acres, a part of the old Prudencio Yorba place. The Travis family came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama and reached Los Angeles in 1869, and in 1898 Travis married into the Californios: his wife was Zoraida B. Yorba, a daughter of Prudencio Yorba and a granddaughter of Bernardo. When the school district built a campus on the ground it took the ranch's name.

The streets name the people who worked the land. Via del Vaquero, Via del Jinete the rider, Via del Potrero the pasture, Via del Fierro the branding iron and Via Estancia name the job, while Via Cota, Via Lugo, Via Sepulveda, Via Nietos, Via Ontiveros, Via Noriega, Via Arnaz and Via Alvarado name the Californio families who held the ranchos across this part of the state. Dominguez Ranch Road, Yorba Ranch Road and Via Bernardo say it without translation. Four parks sit inside the boundary and nine miles of trail run through 2,081 homes.
