            Coronado

A 15.2 acre community of 230 addresses on three streets named for the Southern California coast.

            Overview

            About Coronado

Coronado covers 15.2 acres and holds 230 addresses on a single mapped parcel, reached by three streets named for the Southern California coast: Breakers, Carlsbad and Coronado Cay. The zoning is Residential Medium Density, where the municipal code allows up to 18 units to the gross acre; the measured figure is 15 addresses to the acre, closer to that ceiling than most ground of its class in this city.

Acorn Park lies 1,212 feet from the boundary, three acres with a sports field, a tot lot, a restroom, a drinking fountain, picnic tables and an information kiosk. Canyon View Park at 23.8 acres is 1,558 feet off with sand volleyball and hiking trails, and Grand Park at 7.9 acres is 2,562 feet. Capistrano Unified's own address locator assigns this ground to Don Juan Avila Elementary for TK through grade 5, then Don Juan Avila Middle and Aliso Niguel High, and both Don Juan Avila campuses share a site 0.14 miles from the boundary.

            History

            How Coronado was built

Coronado is Spanish for crowned, which is why the San Diego beach city it is named for is nicknamed the Crown City. That city took its own name from the Coronado Islands lying offshore in Mexican water, and its Coronado Cays were built on material dredged out of San Diego Bay. The three streets here keep the coastal theme going: Breakers, Carlsbad and Coronado Cay.

Coronado was built by John Laing Homes starting in 1994, 233 townhomes on 15.2 acres, on the ocean side of the 73 Toll Road close to the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, which had opened four years earlier and carries about thirty miles of trails through old growth oak and sycamore.

            Schools

            Schools serving Coronado

Capistrano Unified serves Coronado, and the district's own address locator returns one set of campuses across the boundary: Don Juan Avila Elementary for TK through grade 5, then Don Juan Avila Middle and Aliso Niguel High. Both Don Juan Avila campuses share a site 0.14 miles away, so the assigned elementary and middle school are also the nearest of their kind, while the assigned high school is 1.7 miles off. The tiles below carry federal enrollment counts and distances measured from the city's published boundary. Confirm the campus for a specific address with the district before it matters to an offer.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Coronado

How big is Coronado, and how many homes are there?

Measured against the boundary the City of Aliso Viejo publishes, Coronado covers 15.2 acres. The city's address layer records 230 addresses inside it, all on a single mapped parcel, reached by three streets.

            Which schools serve Coronado?

Capistrano Unified's own address locator returns Don Juan Avila Elementary for TK through grade 5, then Don Juan Avila Middle and Aliso Niguel High, and it returns the same three at every interior point across the boundary. Both Don Juan Avila campuses are 0.14 miles away and enrolled 672 and 863 students on the 2024-25 federal count; Aliso Niguel High is 1.7 miles off with 2,563.

            When was Coronado subdivided?

Tract 13961 was recorded on 28 October 1993 and covers the whole boundary on its own, signed by Robert M. Strong, registered civil engineer 28300. A recorded map dates the subdivision rather than the buildings on it.

What are the streets named for?

All three take Southern California coastal names: Breakers, Carlsbad and Coronado Cay. The association carries the name of the last of them.

            What parks are nearby?

Acorn Park is 1,212 feet from the boundary at three acres, with a sports field, a tot lot, a restroom and an information kiosk. Canyon View Park at 23.8 acres is 1,558 feet off with sand volleyball, hiking trails and walkways, and Grand Park at 7.9 acres is 2,562 feet with a tot lot, barbecues and lighting.
