            Overview

            About Amber Lane

Amber Lane occupies 39.6 acres of the Camino Grande shelf in east Anaheim, reached from Camino Grande by way of Amber, Jacaranda and Tourmaline. The city records 66 addresses and 63 parcels inside the boundary, every one of them a detached single family lot, and the median lot runs 2,905 square feet. The general plan gives 32.9 of the 39.6 acres the Open Space designation and only 6.4 acres a residential one, so the houses stand close together on a small share of the ground and the slope around them stays undeveloped.

Anaheim's zoning layer covers 37.5 acres of the boundary with its Multiple-Family Residential district at a floor of 3,000 square feet of lot area per unit, the classification the city uses for small-lot detached housing of this kind. Five of the 63 parcels carry a pool on the assessor record. The whole boundary falls in ZIP 92807 and in flood zone X, the minimal hazard class. Amber Lane sits in Orange Unified School District, feeding Canyon High along with the district's Anaheim Hills elementary campuses.

            History

            How Amber Lane was built

The Amber Lane association was created in 1987, at the western end of Anaheim Hills, and it is townhouse ground rather than ranch lots. Two of its streets, Amber and Tourmaline, take their names from gemstones, and Jacaranda from the tree. Of the roughly forty acres inside the boundary only about six carry houses, and the rest is hillside held as open space, which is how most of Anaheim Hills was laid out. Anaheim Hills was the first residential development anywhere to use landform grading, a method that rounds a cut slope so it reads as natural hillside instead of stepped terraces, and it is the reason the ridges above these roofs still look like ridges.

Camino Grande, the road that carries most of these addresses, runs east until it reaches the edge of the Oak Canyon Nature Center, so the wall of oaks at the end of the street is not landscaping but the canyon itself. Anaheim only crossed the Santa Ana River into these hills in 1960, in a land swap with the City of Orange made so it could build a reservoir on ground bought from the cattle rancher Louis Nohl. Everything here, the water, the roads and the houses, followed that decision.
