How Suburbia was built
Suburbia sits on the north bank of the Santa Ana River, and that side of the water was Bernardo Yorba's country. Governor Jose Figueroa granted him the 13,328 acre Rancho Canon de Santa Ana, the Canyon of Santa Ana, in 1834. Yorba was born in 1800, a son of the Jose Antonio Yorba who held the rancho on the other bank, and he ran thousands of cattle and horses across more than thirty five thousand acres from the Hacienda de San Antonio while serving terms as alcalde of Santa Ana. Yorba Linda carries his name. The rancho was patented in 1866 and then broken up through a partition suit in which two Los Angeles attorneys, Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, took land as their fee.
Suburbia was built in 1971, all of it in the one year, and it holds three hundred and thirty six homes on twenty four acres. Its streets are first names: Alice, Beth and Jeanine, alongside Jackson and Park Vista. Somebody named three lanes after three women when this place was laid out, which is the kind of detail that survives in a street sign long after anyone remembers who they were.
