How Summit Park was built
Summit Park was built in 1995, in one season, at the far eastern edge of the city where Weir Canyon Road climbs out of the Santa Ana Canyon. The canyon it looks into is older ground than the street plan suggests. The Butterfield Stage route ran through it, and a monument in the canyon marks the Mexican ox cart drivers who hauled over the same trail.
Louis E. Nohl took a deed to the Bixby land in the Santa Ana Canyon on 6 October 1943 and ran 1,100 head of cattle over roughly 5,800 acres. Anaheim Hills grew out of 4,200 of those acres after 1970, and this end of it was among the last built. Ronald Reagan Park sits largely inside the boundary, sixteen acres on a hilltop with ball fields, courts and a trailhead, and it was called Toyon Park until the city renamed it in 2011.
