How The Palms in Nohl Ranch was built
The Palms sits on the Nohl Ranch and names its streets after the working end of a horse. A hackamore is a bitless bridle that steers from pressure on the nose, the tool a vaquero used on a green horse. A palomino is the golden coat with the white mane. Trailblazer and Lonestar finish the picture. That was not decoration when these streets were drawn: Louis E. Nohl and his wife took deed to this land on 6 October 1943 and ran eleven hundred head of cattle over five thousand eight hundred acres, with avocados and about twenty three acres of oranges alongside, and their children swam in the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Company canal on summer evenings.
By the late 1960s grazing land was worth more sold than standing. On 30 October 1970 Santa Anita Consolidated took deed to 4,200 acres of it to build a planned community, a Texaco Ventures joint venture took over the residential land in August 1971, and the first neighborhood opened in July 1972. The Palms followed, a hundred and forty four addresses over forty acres, on Nohl Ranch ground that still carries the rancher's name on the road outside.
