            Bellehurst Tract

The largest neighborhood Buena Park draws on its own boundary layer, 559 acres wrapped around a country club and a regional park.

            Overview

            About Bellehurst Tract

Bellehurst Tract covers 558.6 acres, the largest of the twenty eight Buena Park neighborhoods in this guide and fifty three acres more than the next. The city's address layer records 1,174 addresses inside it across 1,149 parcels, on 11.63 miles of street. Lots here are the largest in the city's register at a median of 0.254 acres, and the zoning reads as four steps of lot size: 143.9 acres at 8,000 square feet, 102.0 acres at 10,000, 20.0 acres at 16,000 for select estate lots, and 16.0 acres of low density multifamily.

Two hundred acres inside the boundary are zoned Recreational Space, which is the Los Coyotes Country Club ground, and 44.6 acres of Ralph B. Clark Regional Park fall inside it as well, out of the park's 62.6. Thirty seven street names run through the neighborhood and several repeat the names of golf courses: Brae Burn, Cypress Point, Oakmont, Pebble Beach and Saint Andrews, with Links and Country Club among the rest. Mail splits between 90621 and La Habra's 90631, and the neighborhood feeds Charles G. Emery Elementary, Gordon H. Beatty Middle and Sunny Hills High.

            History

            How Bellehurst Tract was built

This is the oldest inhabited ground in Buena Park. The adobe headquarters of Rancho Los Coyotes stood where the Los Coyotes Country Club golf course is now, and in January 1847 Commodore Robert Stockton camped there with American forces on the way to the Battle of the San Gabriel River. The Daughters of the American Revolution set a bronze plaque on the spot in 1931, it was lost, and it turned up again when the tract was being graded in the 1950s. The rancho itself came out of the 1834 division of Manuel Nieto's Spanish grant, and it passed from Juan Jose Nieto to Juan Bautista Leandry, who briefly renamed it La Buena Esperanza, the good hope.

The country club opened in 1957 to a Billy Bell design, twenty seven holes in three nines with water on most of them, and the streets that wrap around it were named to match. Saint Andrews, Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Oakmont, Deepdale, Brae Burn, Knollwood, Burlingame, Greenbriar, Waverly, Sunnybrook, Vestavia, Ridglea, Fox Hills and Coral Ridge are the roll call of American and Scottish championship golf clubs. A buyer walking these blocks is walking a directory of the game. The lots reflect it too: at a median of roughly a quarter acre they are the largest in Buena Park, and the 558 acres inside the boundary hold only about 1,174 addresses.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Bellehurst Tract

            How big is Bellehurst Tract?

Bellehurst covers 558.6 acres, which makes it the largest of the twenty eight Buena Park neighborhoods in this guide. The city's address layer records 1,174 addresses inside it across 1,149 parcels.

What is inside the boundary besides houses?

About 200 acres zoned Recreational Space, which is the Los Coyotes Country Club ground, and 44.6 acres of Ralph B. Clark Regional Park out of that park's 62.6 acres.

What are the Emery fossil beds?

The Emery Borrow Pit at 8800 Rosecrans Avenue, inside Ralph B. Clark Regional Park. It was a marsh whose fossil beds were exposed when the state quarried sand and gravel for the Santa Ana and Riverside Freeways between 1956 and 1973. Mammoth, ground sloth and ring tailed cat came out of it, along with the only known fragments of an unusual prehistoric camel found in North America, and the County of Orange acquired the property in 1974.

            When was Bellehurst recorded?

Six maps in 1957, all surveyed by R. W. Meyer under license RCE 9347: Tracts 3111, 3211, 3219 and 3234 on 13 June, Tract 3250 on 1 August and Tract 3261 on 17 October. Tract 3111 alone carries 352 of the parcels inside the boundary.
