How Summerhill Homes was built
Summerhill sits in the northeast corner of Fullerton where Bastanchury Road, Associated Road and State College Boulevard come together, on the hills above the university. The roughly 93 homes went up in 1978, and the street names are a straight description of the terrain the builder was working with: Mountain Ridge, Hilltop, Highcrest, Blueridge, Pinecrest, Oakridge, Hollyoak and Wildwood.
The timing is not an accident. Cal State Fullerton opened in 1957 as Orange County State College and moved onto its permanent State College Boulevard campus in 1963. Through the 1960s and 1970s the campus, the arboretum beside it and the 57 freeway along the city's eastern edge turned this hillside from the back of the citrus belt into commuter ground, and Summerhill is one of the neighborhoods that filled it in.
