Thirty-six acres recorded on one map in 1988 and built out in a single year.

            Overview

            About Huntington Place

Huntington Place covers 35.6 acres measured against the city's published boundary and holds 162 residential addresses among the 181 the address layer records inside the line. No address carries a unit designator and the assessor classes all 163 dwellings as single-family residential. Eight named streets serve the community across 1.17 miles: Darrow, Power, Shadwell, Hillsdale, Spurney and Lawton drives with Dove and Fern circles closing the ends.

City zoning and the general plan both read the whole boundary as residential low density, and the boundary itself fills 98.6 percent of its own convex hull, which makes it one of the most regular shapes on the register. The assessor's median building is 3,895 square feet with a tenth to ninetieth percentile band of 3,284 to 3,938, a spread of only about 650 feet across the community, on a median lot of 6,720 square feet. Eighty of the 163 dwellings carry a pool. The community sits outside the Coastal Zone appeal jurisdiction, and Gisler Park lies within 250 meters of the line.

            History

            How Huntington Place was built

Huntington Place is a 1990s neighborhood on the east side of the city, with 158 of its 162 homes finished in that decade beginning in 1990, across about 36 acres. Its streets, Darrow Drive, Power Drive, Shadwell Drive, Hillsdale Lane, Spurney Lane, Lawton Drive and the Dove and Fern circles that close the ends, are quieter than the beach naming further west, which suits a part of town that is a couple of miles inland.

The land it sits on was farmed for far longer than it has been built on. This coastal plain grew lima beans, asparagus, peppers, celery and sugar beets, and Holly Sugar operated a processing plant that was later converted into an oil refinery. From the 1890s to about 1910 the district was one of the country's top celery producers, after David E. Smeltzer established the crop commercially in Orange County in 1891, and a blight from around 1905 to 1908 pushed growers into sugar beets and winter cabbage.
