            History

            How Portola Luna was built

The 71 townhomes were laid out in June 2017 near the civic center, on ground that had been subdivided and resubdivided since 1915. El Centro Lions Park is a few steps from the boundary, the oldest park in the city, taken over from the Lions Club in 1948 and still the site of the Corn Festival on the first weekend of August. The name Portola belongs to Gaspar de Portola, whose expedition found the pass that gave La Habra its name in 1769.

Five of Portola Luna's six interior lanes are named for California avocado varieties, Fuerte, Gwen, Hass, Pinkerton and Reed, with Lula the sixth. Fuerte is Spanish for strong. There is no other street naming scheme in the city that points this directly at what the ground used to grow.

What is El Centro Lions Park?

It is the oldest park in La Habra, 3.98 acres the city acquired from the Lions Club in 1948, sitting 0.01 miles from the boundary near the civic center. The city holds its annual Corn Festival there on the first weekend of August.
