How Sunset Place was built
Sunset Place was built between 1976 and 1978 on the older east side of town, which puts it among the earlier detached tracts in what is now Laguna Hills. By then Leisure World had been open up the road since 1964, after Ross Cortese bought a piece of the Moulton Ranch in 1962, and the surrounding county land was filling in fast. Eighty six percent of residents voted for cityhood on 5 March 1991, and Laguna Hills became a city on 20 December 1991. The city files Sunset Place in its area called The Missions.
The community is unusually simple in its layout. Sixty eight detached homes on about fifteen acres, addressed on just two streets, Sunset Place East and Sunset Place West, which face each other. The houses are small by later standards at about 1,303 square feet with three bedrooms on lots of roughly an eighth of an acre.
