How El Toro Mobile Estates was built
El Toro was the name of this place for well over a century. The settlement went by it from about 1863, and it was still El Toro when the Marine Corps built its air station a few miles west in 1942, borrowing the name of a village that the 1940 census counted at 130 people. The base went up on Irvine Company ground that carried the largest lima bean field in North America, and it ran until 2 July 1999.
El Toro Mobile Estates covers 42 acres on Muirlands Boulevard and holds 332 homes on six ground parcels, which is how the county records this kind of ownership. The Aliso Creek Trail runs through it, part of the boundary sits in the creek's mapped flood zone, and the association runs a pool and a spa. The city still lists it by name on its own Neighborhood Watch roster, and it is one of three mobile home communities on Muirlands in this set.
