            History

How Lake Forest II was built

Lake Forest II is the largest community in the city and the one that carries its origin story. The master association was established in 1970 and covers 3,436 homes, and it runs the Sun and Sail Club at the corner of Toledo Way and Lake Forest Drive. That was Occidental Petroleum's doing: the company built houses in and among the grown out eucalyptus groves in the late 1960s, and the forest and the city's two man-made lakes are the two halves of the name the city took at incorporation in 1991.

Lake 2, at 33.5 acres, sits wholly inside this boundary, the only named lake any of these fifty communities fully contains. Four parks are inside it as well, including Serrano Creek Park at 23 acres and Heritage Hill Park, and the recreation layer records four community pools, seventeen tennis courts and fourteen basketball courts. The association names ten neighborhoods of its own: Forest Creek, Indian Hills, Lake Park West, Park Place, Parkwood Estates, Parkwood Estates II, Prairie Ridge, Ranchwood, Serrano Ridge and The Woods.

Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park holds 1,575 acres of county open space against the north edge of the city, and the city's trail map carries 49 named trails.

Across the whole city the general plan sets 3,756 acres to residential use and 3,065 acres to open space and parks, which is why so much of Lake Forest reads as green from the ridgelines.
