            Los Alamitos, CA

            Parkewood

Twelve acres of Los Alamitos on three streets named Lunar, Olympic and Satellite, laid out on a tract map recorded in December 1969.

            Overview

            About Parkewood

Parkewood covers 12.3 acres and holds 103 addresses on 109 parcels. The lots are the smallest the county records in any of the city's sixteen neighborhoods, about 0.06 acres each, and the city zones the neighborhood Limited Multi Family Residential. Three streets run 0.38 miles inside the boundary: Lunar, Olympic and Satellite.

No park sits inside the boundary, and sewage from these streets discharges south into the Seal Beach local collection system. The city's own park space runs to 18 acres across four neighborhood parks and five pocket parks, the largest Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue at close to seven acres, and the Aquatic Center the city leases and operates holds the USA Water Polo National Training Center and an outdoor 50 meter pool. Los Alamitos Unified School District covers the neighborhood, with Oak Middle enrolling 1,017, McAuliffe Middle 1,031 and Los Alamitos High at 3591 Cerritos Avenue enrolling 2,809.

            History

            How Parkewood was built

The three streets here are Lunar, Olympic and Satellite, and county construction years put almost every home on them in 1970 and 1971. Apollo 11 had landed in July 1969. Naming a street Lunar and the next one Satellite in the months after that is a builder reading the room, and it makes Parkewood one of the few places in Orange County where you can date a neighborhood off its street signs alone.

There is a second reason the space age was on people's minds here. The airfield east of town had been a Naval Reserve Air Base since May 1942 and was the busiest reserve air base in the country during the Korean War, and on 16 July 1957 Major John Glenn took off from it and flew to New York in three hours and twenty three minutes, beating the transcontinental record by nearly twenty two minutes. Five years later he was in orbit. Los Alamitos had watched him leave.

            Lifestyle

            The Parkewood lifestyle

The city keeps 18 acres of public park across four neighborhood parks and five pocket parks. Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue is the largest of them at 6.75 acres, with a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and a softball field. Coyote Creek Park opened in 2013 and turned a bare utility corridor into a 3.69 acre greenway along the Coyote Creek Channel.

Laurel Park runs to 4.33 acres on Bloomfield Street with a lighted multipurpose field and lighted tennis courts, and it has hosted the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League since 1974. The Aquatic Center, which the city leases and operates, is home to the USA Water Polo National Training Center and an outdoor 50 meter pool.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Parkewood

            When was Parkewood built?

Around 1970. Tract 5868 was recorded with the county on 11 December 1969, surveyed by Harold L. Raab, and it created all three of the neighborhood's streets. The county carries a build year on 102 parcels here and half of them read 1970, with the newest at 1971.

Why are the lots in Parkewood so small?

Because the neighborhood was platted at higher density than the city's single family tracts. The middle of the lot size range is about 0.06 acres, the smallest the county records in any of the sixteen neighborhoods on the city's map, and the city zones Parkewood Limited Multi Family Residential.

            How big is Parkewood?

The boundary the city draws encloses 12.3 acres. The county records 109 parcels and 103 addresses inside it, with 0.38 miles of street across three names: Lunar, Olympic and Satellite.

            Where does Parkewood's sewer go?

South. The city records that sewage from these streets discharges into the Seal Beach local collection system rather than staying inside the Los Alamitos network.

            Which schools serve Parkewood?

Los Alamitos Unified School District covers all of it. The district enrolls 603 students at Los Alamitos Elementary on Bloomfield Street, 1,017 at Oak Middle on Oak Street, 1,031 at Sharon Christa McAuliffe Middle on Cerritos Avenue and 2,809 at Los Alamitos High at 3591 Cerritos Avenue. All nine of the district's comprehensive schools have been honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools, California Distinguished Schools, or both. The district publishes no attendance boundary map, so confirm the assigned campus for a specific address with the district.
