How Quail Run was built
Quail Run is a neighborhood of 206 homes on 55.5 acres, which makes it one of the more loosely built communities in the city: better than a quarter acre for each home, on ground the city gives its lowest residential designation of up to 3.5 homes an acre.
The ground was Rancho Mission Viejo, the cattle and agricultural holding the O'Neill family ran across southern Orange County after Richard O'Neill and James Flood bought into the old ranchos in the 1880s. The family and its partners formed the Mission Viejo Company in 1963, Orange County adopted its master plan in 1965, and the first families moved in the year after.
