How Montellano was built
Montellano is one of the neighborhoods inside Talega, the inland hill country San Clemente spent more than a decade planning before anyone lived in it. The city approved the first Talega plan in 1988, amended it twice through the 1990s, and construction did not begin until 1999, on a property of 3,510 acres in the northeastern corner of town. Talega ended up with more than thirty named neighborhoods across that ground, and Montellano is one of the roomier ones, four short streets of large lot houses. The name is borrowed from a small city in the province of Seville, which is exactly the habit the developers followed everywhere here: Cantabria, Catania and Portomarin are all names lifted off a map of Spain and Italy.
The four street names inside Montellano work as a single idea rather than a random list. Calle Angelitos, Calle De La Luna, Calle Vista Del Sol and Corte De Nubes are the little angels, the moon, the view of the sun and the court of clouds, which is a reasonable description of what you look at from a ridge about three miles back from the water. Talega was still unincorporated county territory when grading started, and it was annexed to San Clemente while the houses were going up, so early residents watched their address change around them.

Lifestyle
The Montellano lifestyle
San Clemente keeps ten beaches of its own along the shore, from North Beach past the pier to Riviera, and the city's Marine Safety division staffs them. The pier itself carries restrooms, metered parking, fire rings and the Amtrak and Metrolink platform at its foot.
The city publishes five trail networks that run from the sand up into the canyons and along the ridgelines. Bikes are welcome on all of them, electric bikes are not allowed on the Beach Trail, dogs are welcome on a leash, and horses are permitted on the Forster Ridgeline, Prima Deshecha and Cristianitos trails. City parks are open from 6 am to 10 pm without a reservation unless a group needs a permit.
