How Fairhaven was built
Fairhaven takes its name from Fairhaven Memorial Park, the cemetery a short way east of the neighborhood on the same Fairhaven Avenue that runs along its northern edge. Businessman Oliver Halsell and a group of local investors opened it on August 28, 1911, and built it as a memorial park rather than a traditional cemetery, setting flat markers into open lawn instead of rows of upright headstones.
The houses around the cemetery came later and mostly at once. The tract is overwhelmingly a 1960s neighborhood, filled in as Santa Ana's population swelled from 45,533 in 1950 to 156,601 by 1970, with a scatter of older houses from the 1920s and 1930s still standing near the cemetery gates from before the postwar tract went up around them.
