How Riverview was built
Two of the neighborhood's landmarks sit side by side on West Santa Clara Avenue. River View Golf Course, eighteen holes laid out along the river at 1800 W. Santa Clara, takes up more than eighty acres of the neighborhood's open ground. Next door at 1714 W. Santa Clara is the log cabin of the Orange Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, a hunting and fishing conservation group that received its charter in 1938 and whose walls are still covered with decades of mounted fish and game. The Riverview Neighborhood Association holds its quarterly meetings in that cabin, which is an unusual thing for a postwar tract neighborhood to be able to say.
The houses themselves are early 1950s, put up in a few quick years on former farm ground as Santa Ana more than doubled in population between 1950 and 1960. The street names read like a list of what people wanted then, Riviera, Pacific, Elm, Spruce and Poplar, and the trail along the top of the levee at 17th Street still leads down to the river the neighborhood was named for.
