How Cambridge of Columbus Square was built
Cambridge is one of the pieces of Columbus Square, the neighborhood built on the old Marine Corps Air Station after it closed. Its homes were finished around 2007. The City of Tustin records that the master developer for Columbus Square was Marble Mountain Partners, a joint venture of Lennar Homes and William Lyon, which sold individual sites on to other builders, which is why the neighborhood reads as a set of separate communities rather than one.
The ground under it was an airfield for fifty seven years. Construction started on 1 April 1942 and it opened that October as Naval Air Station Santa Ana, built for blimps patrolling the coast for submarines. The two wooden hangars raised for those airships were among the largest free-standing wooden structures in the world; the one still standing is 1,072 feet long and 192 feet tall. The base was reactivated in 1951 as the first American air facility built purely for helicopters, took the name Marine Corps Air Station Tustin in 1979, and closed in July 1999.
