How Tustin Place Condos was built
This complex did not start out as Tustin Place. The City of Tustin's historical resources survey records that it was built in 1965 as Saddleback Villa and renamed Tustin Place in 1976. The survey singles it out for an unusual honeycomb site plan and an architecturally distinctive community building, which is why it is on the city's list of properties worth a closer look.
It stands on Mitchell Avenue, named for Ralph and Johanna Mitchell, who established their ranch and home in south Tustin in 1889. Their son Willis G. Mitchell became manager of the Irvine Ranch. Streets across south Tustin were named this way as the city annexed and built between 1955 and 1965, keeping the ranchers' names on ground that no longer grew anything.
