How Sycamore Glen Townhomes was built
Sycamore Glen was built in 1987 and its streets run alphabetically through trees and fruit: Almond, Apricot, Aspen, Avocado, Banyon, Boxwood, Carob, Catalpa, Eucalyptus, Evergreen, Hawthorne, Holly. Two of those, almond and apricot, were crops Tustin actually grew.
Apricots were produced quite extensively here for a time, in C.E. Utt's phrase, before most of those orchards disappeared. Growers tried nearly everything the climate allowed. Grapes were the principal crop until Anaheim disease destroyed the vineyards, and in the end only oranges, lemons and walnuts paid. The sycamore in the name is local too: the original school district here was called Sycamore because there were more sycamore trees around Tustin than in all the rest of the valley.
