How Tustin Imperial Townhomes was built
Tustin Imperial was built in 1964 on Mitchell Avenue, and the street is worth knowing about. It carries the name of Ralph and Johanna Mitchell, who established their ranch and home in south Tustin in 1889. Their son Willis G. Mitchell went on to manage the Irvine Ranch, and their grandson Willis, known as Bud, went to Tustin High and farmed in the Irvine area.
That was how south Tustin was named. As the city spread in every direction between 1955 and 1965, annexing land and turning citrus groves into housing tracts, the new streets were given the names of the ranchers and early residents who had farmed them. Utt Drive, Nisson Road, Warner Avenue, Williams Street and Preble Drive all came about the same way.
