How Village Center was built
Yorba Linda's first center was the pair of citrus packing houses beside the Pacific Electric station. The town itself dates from 1908, when the Janss Investment Company, which had bought the land from the Fullerton businessman Jacob Stern, subdivided it and named it Yorba Linda, joining the ranching family's name to linda, Spanish for pretty. In 1910 the first lemon and orange groves were planted, and the Yorba Linda Citrus Association formed in 1912.
The Spanish streets are colors. Via Amarilla is yellow, Via Azul blue, Via Roja red and Via La Naranja orange, with Via Pepita, the pip or seed, sitting among them. Avenida de la Luz is the avenue of light, Avenida de las Estrellas of the stars, Avenida de los Arboles of the trees and Avenida de los Suenos of dreams. And then there is Mirkwood Run, which reaches past all of that for the dark forest of Norse legend that J.R.R. Tolkien made famous in The Hobbit.
