How Amberwood was built
Amberwood was built in 1973 and added to through the rest of the decade, finishing around 1979 with roughly 230 attached homes on 16.9 acres. It went up on the west side of Fullerton at a moment when the city was converting the last of its working groves into housing, and the homes were designed around private front patios rather than back yards, which is what the land budget allowed.
The city took its name from George H. Fullerton, president of the Pacific Land and Improvement Company, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. What followed was sixty years of Valencia oranges and other citrus, and later oil, and the street name Avenida Selva, the forest avenue, belongs to the housing that replaced the groves rather than to anything that grew here.
