How Coyote Hills Greens was built
The ground under Applewood Circle and Grandwood Drive sits in the West Coyote Hills, which took their name from the Rancho Los Coyotes and have carried it since the 1870s. The hills were a major oil field from 1890, and extraction went on there for most of a century before it stopped. Most of the West Coyote Hills has been built over since, and the 510 acres that are still open belong to Pacific Coast Homes, the land development arm of Chevron.
The houses came long after the derricks. The 112 homes here were finished in 1981, on two streets that run out into the hillside and stop. The greens in the name are the shared green the plan wrapped around them rather than a fairway. The golf course that carries the Coyote Hills name did not open until 1996, and it is on the other side of Fullerton, out in the East Coyote Hills near Bastanchury Road, where Cal Olson laid out eighteen holes in partnership with Payne Stewart.
